INAUGURAL SANDBLAST COMPETITION RULES
2011
I. Site and Site Access
1. Each team receives a plot approximately 22’ wide and 25’ deep with a 3’ shared walkway between the plots.
2. A 5’ walkway will be fenced on the public side, to protect the sand sculptures from spectators and to be utilized by the judges.
3. Should there be seaweed within the plot(s), each team is allowed to remove the seaweed provided no sand is moved within the plot.
4. Each team is responsible for obtaining and installing a shade canopy at their site, (if desired – not mandatory).
5. All teams must register before access is permitted to the beach. Registration will take place from 6pm to 8pm at Amelia Hotel & Suites on Friday, March19 and Saturday, March 20 from 6am to 7am at the Seaside Beach entrance.
6. No motorized vehicles are allowed on the beach.
II. Sandblast Building Materials
1. Each team will be provided approximately 10 cubic yards of sand within their site.
a. No additional sand will be provided
b. Each team may gather sand from behind or in front of its site as long as it does not occur within the 5’ Official walkway or impede traffic flow along the beach.
c. Sand may not be gathered until official start time
2. Each team is permitted to use framework for the sand sculptures provided sound judgment is used and there is no danger to participants or spectators. Framework may be placed within the plot before the start of the competition, provided that no sand is moved with the plot for the setup.
3. No formwork, rebar, adhesives, etc. are to be incorporated into the sculpture.
a. Decorative materials are not allowed
b. Addition of any color is not allowed
c. Sculptures must be made of sand only
III. Sandcastle Building Equipment
a. No generators are allowed due to an on-going effort of being environmentally responsible. The concern is not only accidental spills along the edge of the beach and in the surf, but also the noise and potential burns.
b. Each team must provide its own water-carrying tools: (examples: plastic trash cans, buckets).
IV. Team Identification Signage
1. Each team must provide one Team Identification Sign with mounting posts.
a. Maximum permitted Team Identification Sign size is 24” x 36”.
b. No additional signage is allowed
c. Signage must list Team name or name of company entering the competition. The theme of your sculpture must also be included.
d. Team sponsors are allowed to be recognized on the Team Identification Sign or canopy or tent.
V. Team Members and Behavior:
1. Team Captains are responsible for policing the behavior of the team members.
2. Dangerous or reckless behavior will not be tolerated. Alcohol consumption on the beach is prohibited by law.
a. Such behavior could result in the disqualification of your team and possible removal from the beach.
b. Please remember this is a family event and you are representing your company and a professional organization.
3. Any team with a member who threatens and/or uses abusive language or behavior toward an event official or another participant, will be required to leave the beach and the team will be disqualified.
4. Each team must respect the space of the sites around them.
a. A team that damages a competitor’s site will be required to assist in the repair of the site.
b. Points will be deduced in final scoring based on the infraction.
5. Teams cannot combine sites.
6. No obscene sculptures are allowed.
VI. Participant Bands:
1. Teams are not limited in size, but each participant in the site must wear a Participant Event Wristband.
a. Each team receives 10 Participant Event Wristbands with advance registration; additional bands may be purchased in advance with registration for $10.00 each or on-site at the Information Tent for $15.00 per person (cash only).
b. Participant Event Wristbands must be worn for participation within the sandcastle plot and for access to sponsor tents.
c. Failure to wear Participant Event Wristbands while in the sandcastle plot will result in point deductions and/or disqualification.
d. Children under 12 years do not need a Participant Event Wristbands.
e. No professional sand sculptors will be allowed to participate on the day of the event – doing so will be grounds for disqualification.
VII. Sculptures:
1. Great expense is being made to protect the sandcastles for viewing, official photographs and related activities immediately following the event and for viewing on Sunday.
DO NOT DESTROY YOUR SCULPTURE AFTER THE EVENT

1. Each team is responsible for keeping the 5’ walkway in front of their site clear of spectators and participants while judging is occurring. Bribing officials with ice cold drinks is allowed!
X. Competition Schedule – Saturday March 20
Rules Review (Mandatory if not attended on Friday evening) 5:30am – 6:30am
Team Check-in at beach 6:00am – 7:00am
Bring equipment/supplies to sand sculpture site 7:00am – 8:00am
Competition 8:00am – 1:00pm
Judging of sculptures 1:00pm – 2:30pm
Awards presentations 3:00pm – 4:00pm
Remove supplies/equipment 4:00pm – 5:00pm
After event party downtown 7:00pm till????
